Europe must seize the momentum to become a Union that offers prosperity to its people and is fit for the challenges of our times, including through more integration and more cooperation. We have been leading the way in increasing EU’s climate ambitions and on track to climate neutrality in a socially just way. Addressing the climate emergency was already our priority before the pandemic and the war in Ukraine but it has now become more urgent than ever.
For us socialists and democrats, the message is clear: everyone – individuals and corporations – must contribute fairly to their tax obligations, and pay taxes where they generate their profits.
The idea that public services and institutions are the expression of social rights, rather than consumer services, is central to our socialist and social-democratic values. That is why we have pushed for the adoption of a European Child Guarantee, that protects child rights throughout the EU.
Today, Europe’s task is to create a sustainable, fair, socio-economic model, a green transition and democratic renewal. These must promote social justice, equality and strong welfare states, putting citizens at the heart of the EU. This publication sets out the PES policy proposals for a new model: the Circular Economy. It will deliver benefits for workers and citizens, create a stronger and more sustainable economy, and ensure our planet’s boundaries are respected.
